چکیده

The problem of finding the distributione according to absolute magnitudes of a group of stars is one of considerable importance. .Except for the.case in which all the stars in the group are at approximately the same distance, the problem can usually be solved only by making certain assumptions as to the nature of the distribution function, either of the absolute magnitudes, or of the accidental and systematic errors in the measured absolute magnitudes. If we may assume that the distribution of the absolute magnitudes in the group is that corresponding to a normal error distribution, or that the errors in the measured absolute magnitudes have this distribution, the problem is definite and can be solved by comparing the distribution of angular velocities with that of the radial velocities. A solution for the case of the second alternative is published in Mount Wilson Contributions, No. 327,1 in connection with the determination of the errors in the spectroscopic absolute magnitudes of giant M stars; but since the modification of the formulas required for the case of the first alternative was only parenthetically referred to, the direct solution of the problem will be given here. It will also be shown that Gyllenberg's solution of the problem can be derived in the same way. We assume that the absolute magnitudes of a group of stars are distributed according to a normal error curve around a mean valueM and with a dispersion q. The individual true absolute magnitudes are denoted by M. The frequency function of the absolute magnitudes is then

Strömgren photometry in globular clusters : M 55 & M 22 ⋆

We present Strömgren CCD photometry for the two galactic globular clusters M55 (NGC 6809) and M22 (NGC 6656). We find average Strömgren metallicities of −1.71±0.04 dex for M55 and −1.62 ± 0.08 dex for M22. The determination of metal abundances in cluster giants with the Strömgren m1 index in comparison with spectroscopic data from Briley et al. (1993) and Norris & Freeman (1982, 1983) shows tha...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Kinematics and Mv Calibration of K & M Dwarf Starsusing

We present a new determination of the luminosities and kinematics of lower main sequence stars in the spectroscopically selected sample of Vyssotsky, covering spectral types from K3 to M5, using Hipparcos parallaxes and proper motions. The stars separate into two kinematically distinct components, which we labeìyoung' andòld' disk. The young component has velocity dispersion (30, 17, 12) km s ?...

A Determination of the Solar Motion and the Stream Motion Based on Radial Velocities and Absolute Magnitudes.

In previous determinations of the motion of the sun in space and of the star streams the stars have been divided for discussion according to spectral type or apparent magnitude. The recent investigations of Adams and Str6mberg' have shown that the intrinsically faint stars have a higher average radial velocity than those that are intrinsically brighter, or in other words, that radial velocity i...

Tip of the Red Giant Branch Distance for the Sculptor Group Dwarf ESO 540 - 032 ?

We present the first V I CCD photometry for the Sculptor group galaxy ESO 540-032 obtained at the Very Large Telescope UT1+FORS1. The (I, V − I) colour-magnitude diagram indicates that this intermediatetype dwarf galaxy is dominated by old, metal-poor ([Fe/H]≈ −1.7 dex) stars, with a small population of slightly more metal-rich ([Fe/H]≈ −1.3 dex), young (age 150 − 500 Myr) stars. A discontinuit...
